The Veil Nebula is the remnant of a Type II supernova explosion that occured approximately 5000 years ago. The East Veil (NGC 6992) is the brighter part of this complex and most often photographed. It is strong in Ha and OIII emission, this the red with teal colored fringes.

At a distance from earth of 1300 to 1500 light years, the supernova explosion would have had the brighness of a full moon.
