ARP 142 in Hydra
Arp 142 is an interacting pair of galaxies 326 million light years away in Hydra. The pair contains the highly disturbed spiral galaxy NGC 2936, and its elliptical companion, NGC 2937 at lower left. Because of it's interaction with NGC 2937, NGC 2936 is undergoing an intense phase of star formation.
Above the pair is UGC 5130, an elongated irregular or an edge-on spiral. Located 230 million light-years away, this galaxy is much closer to us than the colliding pair, and therefore is not interacting with them.
