M101 is 24 million light years distant and the brightest of the M101 group of galaxies.
M101 is bright overall, but has a very low surface brightness making it difficult to photograph adequately, as shown by the number of subs obtained through an 8 inch telescope to achieve this image, which is not well illuminated.
