The
Barnard catalogue was the work of
Edward Emerson Barnard, an american astronomer who is best known for his discovery of
Barnard's star in 1916, which is named in his honor.
B72 is part of the much larger
Dark Horse Nebula.
To the right and below the Snake Nebula is the distinct patch of black, Barnard 68 which blots out all background stars. Below it are found Barnard 69 and Barnard 70. Below those is the larger Barnard 74.
